1. How long have
you been doing a doula?
I started my training as a doula in 2006 and completed my DONA certification
in June, 2007.
2. Why did you
decide to become a doula?
One of my life-long dreams has been to become a midwife. My passion for
pregnancy and birth started as a child and has never changed. I have had
the privilege of attending all three of my grandchildren's birth's (2
c-sections and 1 vbac). I also had the
opportunity to "catch" my son who was carried by my sister-in-law
as his gestational mother (a nurse and I caught him - although we barely
made it to the hospital!) While waiting for my son to graduate from high
school in 2008, I decided that being a doula for the next few years would
be a wonderful start to my midwifery career.
3. What are your
hobbies, passions, etc?
My children and grandchildren are the love of my life. I have loved watching
them grow into such wonderful adults and I love spending time with my
grandchildren. I enjoy sitting on the beach in the sun, having a meal
with friends, shopping for bargains, watching a romantic movie, reading
a good book. I also love going to church and worshiping the Lord.
My passion
is for Africa and the AIDS pandemic. I love spending time in Africa holding
and loving orphaned and abandoned AIDS babies
4. Tell us a little
something about your personal life.
I was born and raised Jewish in Salt Lake City, Utah. I moved to California
when I was 27 and I have lived in Capistrano Beach for the last 20 years.
I have 2 daughters and an one son, 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. I
do missions work in Africa about 2 to 3 times a year.
5. What is your
philosophy about birth?
I believe that the birth of each new life is a gift from God. I believe
that birth is a right of passage for a woman. I believe that every woman
giving birth should be well educated and informed of all options available
so that she and her partner can make wise decisions as to how they would
like their birth to unfold. I believe that each couple should have the
loving emotional and physical support necessary for a healthy birth.
6. What are your
specialties or unique qualities?
I am a nurturer by
nature and I love the hands-on, start-to-finish aspects of being a doula.
I am able to provide the heart and hands of compassion and strength not
only to the birthing mother, but also the husband and family; as well
as providing comfort measures, and emotional support during this very
special time. I am a certified doula, childbirth educator and a trained
birth assistant to midwives.
